Gold Soundz (Let it Bea)

Bea Arthur is not a meme, OK. I want to take a serious moment to appreciate all that Dorothy and The Golden Girls have given us, while also examining what role, if any, these Miami post-panthers have had on some of the music you appreciate today. Sure, she taught us crucial pre-Degrassi lessons about teen pregnancy, infidelity, and accepting cross-dressing siblings. But what does Bea have to do with beats? We asked a few of our favorite musicians that very question.

How has Bea Arthur and/or the GGs in general influenced your musical career?

Thomas from Bellman Barker: "John owns an autographed photo of Bea Arthur that he got at a garage sale years ago - he has it hanging in front of his electronic drum kit in Baltimore. So clearly, it's the inspiration for all his beats. Most of our songs are about marrying Leslie Nielsen and moving to Atlanta (ed: in the series' final episode, Dorothy married Blanche's uncle Lucas Hollingsworth, played by Leslie Nielsen). Also, we have a shelved project called 'Let it Bea' - honestly, it's kind of hard to tell where Bea ends and BB begins."

Dan from Dan Deacon: "Like claws. Deep bold strokes of light."

Brian aka Mux Mool: "Brother Ali had a remix contest for one of his songs (Original King). A line from the song is 'That shit's Golden Girls that ain't golden gloves' - that was the first time I had ever synced up one of my beats with vocals. I actually used what became the Death 9000 beat. Similarly, I did watch a lot of Golden Girls at my grandma's house when I was a kid, which in retrospect, has had absolutely no effect."

Bruce from Double Dagger: "No influence whatsoever. R.I.P."

Who's your favorite Golden Girl and why?

Brian from Silversun Pickups: (takes a deep breath, scratches chin scrubble...) "How to answer what is undoubtedly the quagmire of our generation?" (This was followed by a long, well-executed platform outlining the attributes and faults of each Golden Girl before he finally settled on Betty White.)

Dave 1 from Chromeo: "Man I haven't watched that show in so long...I don't even remember what their names were...one of them had orange hair. Which one had orange hair? Which one was the youngest one, the cool one? (someone says 'Blanche'). Yeah she got the leather pants like me!" (full interview here)

Joshua from Santa Dads: "My sister [Wham City artist Dina Kelberman] and I watched it growing up along with almost any other sitcom of the 80's and early 90's. At the time I watched it, we did not express any emotional attachment towards the characters on the show. It was more an affection for the concept of the television, not the shows or characters themselves. But if I must choose, as I know I must, my favourite Golden Girl will be Rose Nylund (Betty White). I love her hair, her innocence, her devotion to kindness and childish grace."

Andrew Gold - Thank You For Being a Friend (LP version, 1978)

Pavement - Gold Soundz (live in Hamburg, 1994)

And when we both get older
With walking canes and hair of gray
Have no fear even though it's hard to hear
I will stand real close and say
Thank you for being a friend

And when we die
And float away
Into the night
The milky way
You'll hear me call
As we ascend
I'll say your name
Then once again
Thank you for being a friend

Bmore Round Robin Recap

Future Islands feat. Vic from Beach House (below), Mortal Kombat monologues, Adventure(s) with Mark Brown's lid-popping animation, Double Dagger feat. Blue Leader/Ed Schrader, Nuclear Power Pants in green shark skulls, Wham City theatrics and plenty of raw, unfiltered BO - it was like Whartscape with AC, bouncers and $7 Stellas.

Probably the best act I hadn't seen before was Denny from Smart Growth, who has transformed his sets lately from drumming over Phil Collins needle drops to rocking the crowd Girl Talk style; no mike, just a Mac and dirty South choruses extruded through Capcom rainbows.

Smart Growth - Extreme Ballin'

Props to Dan Deacon and everyone supporting this tour - while there must be many challenges to coordinating 16+ dates with 20+ artists and sleeping on different floors for almost three weeks, you'd never know. This weekend (which sold out and spawned additional late shows each night) ran flawlessly, with a new artist and their A/V accompaniment kicking in seconds after the previous song finished on another stage.

Hopefully this becomes an annual tour and Baltimore is actually be on the schedule next time (failing that, maybe a local remake of Footloose?), and hopefully other artists can take a lesson on ego-free citywide collaboration.

Adventure - Wild Wild Ride

Read a much better review of the weekend from The Village Voice, or below you can experience an approximation of every performance condensed into four minutes courtesy of Showbeast:

The Baltimore Round Robin Is Nigh

You heard about it a few months back, and this weekend the Bmore Round Robin is all up in our NYC kitchen. Here's the rub:

Friday's Eyes Night includes Beach House, Jana Hunter, Wzt Hearts, Nautical Almanac, Lexie Mountain Boys, and more, and puts the focus on "a mixture of folk, noise, theatrics, improvisation-- music that is spiritual, dreamy etc."

Saturday's Feet Night brings music that you dance, thrash, or otherwise move around to and includes the Death Set, Double Dagger, Videohippos, Future Islands, Adventure and Deacon himself.

10/17 New York, NY Le Poisson Rouge - EYES NIGHT
10/18 New York, NY Le Poisson Rouge - FEET NIGHT

BUY NYC TICKETS NOW (only 15 bucks for both nights, top that)

Download a rad Round Robin Comp CD for free here.

Fresh samples:
Adventure - Wild Wild Ride
Smart Growth - Extreme Ballin'
The Death Set -Moving Forward
Double Dagger - We Are The Ones
Future Islands - Old Friend
Height - Mother Earth (Theme from Showbeast)
Jana Hunter - Paint A Babe
Beach House - Gila
Dan Deacon - Wham City
Lesser Gonzalez Alvarez - Mostly A Friend

And a message from Transportation Dept Mgr/folkstress Jana Hunter:

"For those of you interested in attending the Round Robin performances, there is this definite opportunity to get in sans paid ticket. We need oil to power our school bus. Bring us oil, get in free. Here are the details.

Waste Vegetable Oil (WVO) is the stuff that restaurants have used in their fryers. Most restaurants discard this stuff in barrels or incredibly disgusting dumpsters somewhere near their trash dumpsters. If you ask them about it, most of them are more than happy to give this to you, given that they normally have to pay a company to haul it away for them.

We ask that you bring at least 10 gallons (this is not hard to find; decent-sized restaurants throw out avg 50 gallons/week) in order to secure a guest spot, but write me regardless if you are interested in this super deal. Write me, I will write you back, we will get it figured out."

Spank Rock is tentatively scheduled to be in your building this Sunday sometime between the hours of 12pm to 10pm

As we get closer to Whartscape's cash money lightning jumpoff, Chief Wham City whig Dan Deacon stirs the pot further by revealing a special annoucement via a serious of non-crytpic Interweb messages - Spank Rock MC Naeem Juwan will be performing in a collaborative superproject also including DD and Girl Talk's Greg Gillis this weekend at Whartscape (presumably Sunday afternoon).

Not sure when this will happen, but you can leave your cell phone number and a BT technician may or may not call you 30 minutes before it goes down.

Spank Rock - Rick Rubin (President Eutl Rmx)

Quoth Dan:

"In addition to my set and gregg's trey told em set on sunday july 20, at whartscape, gregg gillis (girltalk), naeem juwan (spankrock) and i (dan deacon) will be doing a joint set of all new material jams eternal.

gregg and i have been talking about doing a band together for some time and i'm really excited naeem is going to be a part of it for this rad first birth. hopefully our sick jams turn out sick. tickets are still available but close to selling out. getting tickets would be safer than just showing up. ok baltimore, see you soooooon"

Well that is just huge, as the Spank/Deacon combo Floristree set at last year's Whartscape was the highlight of the weekend (check that here).

Reader contest - What should this supergroup be named???

Special Whartscape prize for best entry (just leave them in the comments).

The rest of the afternoon lineup includes White Williams, Ponytail, Future Islands, Height, Double Dagger (!), Black Dice and more, so, your Sunday is fully fitted. You can tape Ninja Warrior.

Like A Sound You Hear That Lingers In Your Earhole

Dan Deacon sits on the e-couch with Pitchfork Masterblog to discuss the way his music/scene has been potrayed in media + blogz, and more importantly, how he's taking it up a notch for DD 2.0 (titled Bromst and slated for this fall) with reduced woody woodpeckers and enhanced live instrumentation.

This is a relief; homey's a classically-trained musician and we all know he has many, many more tricks up in those sweaty sleeves. Taste some of the new juice tomorrow night when he and Diplo hit Sonar. This night will be full of ridiculous, senseless shenanigans, and you might be going for free (contest is over).

Dan Deacon's Sexy Animal Dreams From The Road

Homey has been touring almost non-stop since 2004, so its not surprising that strange things might happen along the way. Things that maybe shouldn't be shared in an interview with NPR-syndicated Love and Radio, such as having a lucid moonlit encounter with man's BFF. Cover your dog's ears.

Throw Yer Diamondz In The Sky

With the constant spaghetti stream of Day-Glo Play-Doh being squeezed out of Baltimore recently (see: any video from Dan Deacon, Jimmy Joe Roche or of course the Video Hippos) we sat down with one of the many local artists whose work is saturated in buckets of neon paint and awkward moments from 80s bob digi pop culture.

Bmore artist Meredith Moore is most recently known for the fabulous Videohippos spot Narwhals (below) and for probably the most blinged out music video of all time, Diamondz, featuring a Crystal-laced composition by Wham City chief Dan Deacon. And there's lava aplenty in both videos, which we respect.

A quick volley and serve:

BT: How did you arrive in Baltimore doing rad video art?

MM: I was born and raised in Oklahoma, and early on I discovered the richness of creating things/worlds/on your own terms. In high schoolI I yearned for more than just getting stoned and painting self-portraits. I applied to art school and picked Baltimore because they offered me the most in scholarships. I had never been to the East Coast. Culture shock! Good for me!

I started MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art) as a painting major, and was super bored with it a year later. I took a video class on a whim and fell in love. I love the accessibility of the medium - we all grew up on television and movies - AND its 4 dimensional - working with time. Making an experience. I am very in to experiences. Very awesome.

BT: How did you hook up with Videohippos and Dan Deacon?

MM: I had two video classes with the drummer, Kevin O'Meara, but we only eyed each other from afar until the last class when he asked if he could use my video (monster trucks and puppets) for a song. This lead to us becoming partners in crime (and love) and i went on a week long tour with Videohippos and Dan Deacon down to Florida where i encountered the amazing films of Jimmy Joe Roche and the man himself. After that i was hooked on Wham City, Kevin, Snake Mistakes, and audio/visual orgasms. Best times ever.

BT: How do you get hamiltons?

MM: I'm a door girl at shows, I film and edit the Ed Schrader Show sometimes, and i hawk shit and do some basic hustling. (ha!) I just got a job at Whole Foods that pays the bills but doesn't zap me of all my time and energy and allows me to not worry about money and focus on new projects - i'm too young and smart (22) to begin some sort of mediocre career.

BT: We agree. Stay on the hustle. So what's next?

MM: Well i just graduated, so now its all relatively up in the air....but me and my roommate Mark Brown (of are we not men dj status) are starting a video podcast called netdreams which i am very excited about. Also I'm working on the beginning of a super secret personal project, and later this year I'm going to be making a video for one of Dan Deacon's new songs (shhh).

Thanks Meredith. Now a few Bmore breaks:
Curtis Vodka - Diamonds & Cream
Dan Deacon - Snake Mistakes
Videohippos - Narwhals
Videohippos - Toothsub

Girl Talk, Dan Deacon, White Williams at Church 9/18

Master of the Bmore indie electro universe Dan Deacon established a temporary Castle Greenskull at St. John's Church Tuesday night with White Williams and Girl Talk.

Someone stole Dan's glasses and later gave them back. White Williams did not have glasses so we gave him some. He also had two guitarists playing along with drum machines, a laptop, an array of vocal effects and a synthesizer. Girl Talk almost made us feel bad about being in church in the dark next to sweaty tenderonis and a giant inflatable spider.

Whartscape Pt. 2: Mo' Artist Previews

Later in the week our new investigatory journalist Raven Baker will give you an even heartier helping of Whartscape - the origin and roots of its hideous name and the Wham City organizers behind all this nonsense - but today we'll crack into the long list of artists that call Bmore home and will, we assume, be simply rolling out of bed in their Umbros to perform this weekend. All illustrations courtesy of the talented folks at Baltimore production/record label Wildfire Wildfire.

Video Hippos won't know if you're warming up, starting to tap the feet. To gain the attention of the Kevin/Jim duo (with occasional function button twiddling from Wham fam member OCDJ) you must cause a real fit as they operate in a dark emergency room lit only by obscure cartoon noir. A big fat gask mask ensures drummer and animator Kevin O'Meara won't make himself sick with the beats, but you're on your own. Currently touring the neon green states with D. Deacon, and playing Saturday night at Floristree.

Buy their debut album Unbeast the Leash at the show.
Video Hippos - The List
Video Hippos - Kool Shades

We've all spent a few cloudless nights in vacant lots swigging NyQuil and using the B Heezy's witchy slide powers to seance mazzy stars, so, 'nuf said. They tour with Blonde Redhead in August so start perfecting your shoedaze now. Beach House plays Saturday afternoon at 120 North Ave. Buy their debut from Carpark.
Beach House - Apple Orchard
Beach House - Master of None
Beach House - Tokyo Witch

More:
Ponytail play Saturday night at Floristree. Not really our steez but you have to respect the yelling and the shouting and what not.
Ponytail - Lion Down

Ecstatic Sunshine play Friday night at Floristree. We're pretty sure they now make up one Voltron portion of The Death Set, so. Pretty solid choppin.
Ecstatic Sunshine - Little Big Dipper

You "may" have heard of Mr. Dan Deacon, who could eat Tang crystals and watch Rad with James Lipton as they both stare at the "classically trained composer with a Masters degree in electro-acoustic composition" nametag affixed to his ripe neon Daffy Duck tee. Get tickets to the Saturday night show, which also includes Spank Rock, at Wildfire Wildfire or Wham City before it sells out. Don't you want to be a part of the Flickr zone?
Dan Deacon - Wham City
Buy Spiderman of the Rings from Carpark.
