Small Sur Debut Album Preview

In 1962 Jack Kerouac released Big Sur, a story about retreating from society's vices and appreciating simple pleasures from a creaky cabin along the fog-banked coastline of Northern California's Bixby Canyon. Battling isolation, alcoholism, and the threat of a complete mental breakdown, he was writing from the end of the road.

Last year Ben Gibbard locked himself in the same spot to pen songs for Death Cab's newest effort, Narrow Stairs, and the resulting work also looms with the darker aspects of extended introspection (in the opener "Bixby, Canyon Bridge" Gibbard notes "here is where it all ends.") Well into in their thirties and noticing friends settle down, both artists begin to realize their freedom from societal norms and obligations has its own cost on the back end. Work hard enough to find yourself, and you might lose everyone else.

Baltimore-based Small Sur's debut album We Live in Houses Made of Wood, out this August via Portland's Tender Loving Empire, manages to stand just above the Pacific's green and blue wake without carrying its weight. It's a meditative soundtrack for aspiring mountaintop lookouts and steamship stowaways.

Recorded/mastered locally and backed by a handful of Bmore talents including Andy Abelow, Austin Stahl (Private Eleanor) and Wye Oak's Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack, frontman Bob Keal has patiently assembled an organic, textured collection of handcrafted folk nautica celebrating our perfectly imperfect surroundings.

Sit (or stand) somewhere quiet and have a listen.

Dope House Show This Saturday

Picking up where 2001's House Party 4 left off (if you can even consider it part of the series without Kid 'n Play), Small Sur's Bob Kielsun is stepping it up large with another all-acoustic Bmore brown bag crib jam. But instead of tossing donations in a bike helmet, this time you'll be able to support the artists - Lesser Gonzalez Alvarez, Small Sur, Andy Abelow and Anup Kishore Pradhan - with a $5 entry fee. Wear ninja shoes, bring your own beard, and read the egg for clues on how to get there (or email us).

Lesser Gonzalez Alvarez - Mostly A Friend

Small Sur - The Kelp (live at Current Canyon Fest)

Andy Abelow - While You Were Sleeping

Anup Kishore Pradhan - Hidden Nature Is Secret God

Be sure to check the last show with audio from Wye Oak, Ben and Bruno and more.

Monarch. No PA system. Wax & Wane. Bob's cats maybe. Small Sur. BYOB. Ben and Bruno. Lots of beards. Bronze Float.

Yes, in Baltimore even home shows have flyers. From resident/organizer/Small Sur band guy/extremely bearded man Bob Keal: "There will be no PA/mics used for the show. Monarch is coming up with a one-off quiet set just for the occasion, and everyone else's tunes will be special, too." Indeed. Email Bob (bobito at gmail) for directions and you'll soon be brown-bagging your way to a super special secret show! Starts at 7 and ends by 10:30.

Current Canyon Festival Report

Not just a clever name, the Beatbots A/V Club has tons of tasty indie A/V treats from the Current Canyon Festival for your discerning perusal.

One sample below - even at his hairiest, Iron and Wine's Sam Beam has nothing on the power folk beard wielded by Small Sur's Bob Keal, who closes the set by saying "Thanks we're from Small Sur, we don't have any CD's." Which of course sends you scrambling to aquire this rarified acoustic heat black market style like a pair of Yugoslavian blue jeans.
