Exactly 45 seconds after I heard that Swedish electro-poppers The Tough Alliance had covered The Zombies' "Hung Up On A Dream," there was an extremely awkward moment. As the gravity of this news sank in, the sand underneath me began sinking as well. Vibrations filled the air, sweet confusion filled my mind, and a sea of nameless faces rippled in the heat. The volleyball coach just stood there with his hands in his pockets.
It'd be a whole lot cooler if B&S would just start making another album instead of releasing a 1996-2001 BBC comp, but as they have nothing else planned at the moment we'll take what we can get and like it. The four songs from 2001 – The Magic of a Kind Word, Nothing In The Silence, Shoot The Sexual Athlete and (My Girl’s Got) Miraculous Technique, have never previously been available on CD or vinyl and capture the band at the end of their first chapter (i.e. Stuart and Isobel had just broken up and were performing songs about their failed relationship next to each other). And of course Isobel peaced out shortly afterwards.
Random: did you know Belle et Sébastien was a novel by hottie French actress Cécile Aubry starring a six-year-old boy named Sébastien and his dog Belle, a Pyrenean Mountain Dog? And that this was made into a French live-action television series in 1965, and then a Japanese anime version nearly two decades later that you can now watch right now? I usually start every morning off with Air Wolf but this might be even more upbeat.

This weekend starts off with the refreshingly underrated Air France from Gothenburg, Sweden, the closest you're going to get this year to a brand new Avalanches LP. AF uses about 10,000 fewer samples while still mainlining the subconscious undercurrent of every beautiful moment you've ever had or dreamed, symphonic vinyl crackles and faded polaroids, bam. We've had No Way Down on repeat for a few weeks, the digi version is definitely worth buying for $5. Also funny how in February late-night headphone play was almost exclusively reserved for The Zombies, and here we are in June and nothing's changed.

Just as Wes Anderson's use of The Kinks has prompted a younger generation's British re-Invasion, The Zombies wait just beyond the reach of classic rock radio to be discovered and appreciated on another level. We've awarded late-night headphone play almost exclusively to the undead popsters over the last few months (excluding In Rainbows of course), and recommend you try it out. Here's a quick primer: 1968's Odessey and Oracle is the Pet Sounds of their collection, an album that's received more acclaim over the last ten years than when it was released and is widely considered to be one of the top 50-100 albums of all time. My personal favorite is their remastered double LP Decca Stereo Anthology, while completists might go for Zombie Heaven, a 4 CD collection with demos, rarities and live recordings.
Zombie Fun Facts: 1. Odessey and Oracle was recorded in Abbey Road studios just a few months after Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band wrapped up. By the time it was released in April 1968 the band had split; the following year "Time of the Season" became a massive radio hit. 2. "Odyssey" had been misspelled in the cover designs, although at first they tried to play it off. This is why you don't hire the bass player's flatmate for production duties. 3. Odessey and Oracle is one of the very first records to utilize a Mellotron keyboard, largely because their budget didn't allow for session musicians. Mellotrons were later found to be extremely pimp. 4. While the band was in NYC promoting "She's Not There" a few years earlier, drummer Hugh Grundy pitched in for a Shangri-Las gig by revving a backstage motorcycle during their performance of "Leader of the Pack."
If you love The Zombies as much as we do, holla back. It's also OK if you want to discuss a passion for zombies in general, your hypothetical chances of surviving a post-apocalytpic attack, or some of the plans you've already made for if/when this happens.
Now let us run through haunted forests with unmelting technicolor ice cream sangwiches and listen to weekend beats. Let us nestle by hearth's edge in only the squeakiest yellow rubber rain boots with adventurous dusty tomes. Let us take long trips on the short wave. Let us save up energy for Of Montreal on Sunday.
