Phoenix Tonite

We've got two free tickets to tonight's very, very sold out Phoenix show at Terminal 5. Want them? Just sign up for email updates on the right (we post an average of once a week here so it's not a big commitment) and leave a comment making your case. Begging, flirting, flattery or sob stories not necessary to enter - we'll pick a random. Winner will be emailed this afternoon, you can pick these babies up in Chelsea anytime afterwards, and maybe your evening will resemble the video above.

Update: Chana is the winner.

Yo JT, Pop That New Phoenx Rmx

We've heard at least a half dozen "1901" remixes already, but our main homey Alan Wilkis finally made one worth cranking in your Tata. Though this version doesn't outmuscle the original (obviously), the extra-ominously layered synth raises disturbing questions about nineteen second recaps of Kubrick classics and turn of the century soirées. In this video we ask, "What does '1901' really mean, Phoenix? What?"

While this video only raises more questions, know this: Wolfgang Amadeus and Wilkis' new EP Pink and Purple are both slated for a May release, and our imaginary friend Tony says they're going to be dope.

Oh Snap, New Phoenix

Old Guy: This arm ready to throw about 2,000 yards next fall?
Phoenix: Oh, I don't know. We'll see.
OG: Four starters coming back, all lettermen, first track's lookin' tough.

Phoenix - Twenty-one one zero (new album TBD)

Remember we were telling you about the Daft Punk crew's first band called Darlin'? Laurent Brancowitz, guitar player for Phoenix, was in it too. Hard to believe they sucked.

Phoenix - Long Distance Call (25 Hours A Day Rmx)

Phoenix originally started as the backing band for a remix of Air's "Kelly Watch the Stars" single, before building/igniting a nest of cinnamon twigs and re-emerging as a French pop powerhouse.

Le Concorde: Poor Man's Phoenix?

Not even sure what that means since we love both bands, but with Le Concorde's release of Suite last month at least the initial comparisons to Phoenix are warranted.

Get a few listens in and you'll find plenty of differences but a shared appreciation for the earnest pop harmonies available only to those with the courage to croon. And like a dumbass I thought Le Concorde's multi-instrumentalist Stephen Becker, Ph.D was a fellow Frenchman (also once told Kevin Barnes "for some reason I thought Of Montreal were Canadian").

But Le Concorde rock the harmonica hard:
Le Concorde - I Want You Back (from Suite)
Le Concorde - Parallel Lives (from Universe and Villa)

Other Conchords

Lost in Translation: Classic Movie, Beats

There's a popular saying in certain parts of the Southeast, "All great films begin with a shot of Scarlett Johansson's can." While Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation provides the perfect sountrack to describe isolation in a big city, viewers learn that hearty helpings of karaoke, Santori whiskey and ScarJo can be the perfect cure.

Please to enjoy:
Death in Vegas - Girls
Brian Reitzell - On The Subway
Phoenix - Too Young
Jesus and Mary Chain - Just Like Honey
Air - Alone in Kyoto
My Bloody Valentine - Sometimes

Baldwin Brothers fun fact: On September 30, 2003, the same week that Lost in Translation was released, Alec Baldwin made a $1,000 contribution to Vermont Senator James M. Jeffords, who was Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works. Coincidence?
