1. Al Green - I Want To Hold Your Hand - from the 40th anniversary re-release of 1969's Green Is Blues. I pop this off every Sunday morning.
2. Peter Gordon & The Love of Life Orchestra - Beginning of the Heartbreak - Among everything in their crates, LCD Soundsystem chose THIS track to kick off their disco roots-themed FabricLive mix in 2007. They also re-recorded and re-issued it on DFA earlier this year. Now that's how you let the beat build.
3. Delorean - Deli - from their Ayrton Senna EP (not the new album). kind of an odd choice given everything else on this mix is a bit more chill BPM-wise, but it kills, so.
4. Jacques Dutronc - Le Responsable - a French take on British garage/freakbeat. nobody knows about this bro but he's a pimp. here's the mp3.
5. The Outcasts - Loving You, Sometimes - According to Garage Hangover, The Outcasts paid for their own studio time to record "Loving You" in 1969, got some local airplay in Kentucky, scored an opening slot for Neil Diamond, and split. an all-time favorite.
6. Twin Sister - I Want A House (outro) - just a chill lil' outro.
Greetings from the set of Electroma II: Deliblatska Peščara. Tomorrow night we will drag Tang/vermouth-dipped lychee peels across each other's cheeks under the empty sky of Serbia's Vojvodina province, in honor of the Valerie Collective's US debut at Webster Hall (which includes College, Anoraak, Russ Chimes, Lovelock, and many special guests). We will do this in reverent silence but you may enjoy the beats below.
First person to name all of these languages correctly will receive a nifty book light* so that you may continue your worldly academic pursuits well after the sun goes down. If you live in NYC and these songs make you want to take off your pants, please join us tomorrow.
*for real - assuming my Snuggie arrives in the mail next week. If not they are going to get an epic ass chewing, ordered that thing like a month ago. Actual book light niftiness may vary. Also note that if you enter but fail to properly identify all languages correctly, you'll have a choice of either watching the Microsoft Songsmith commercial or the beamz Music Performance System commercial in its entirety (face-melting air solo at 1:19). DO NOT WATCH BOTH OF THEM BACK TO BACK.
This weekend is brought to you a day early by the folks at TaxLo, who offer one lucky Bmore reader two free tickets to:
- Feadz (Ed Banger records) this Saturday 9/13 at Sonar - Tussle on 9/15 at Talking Head - Midnight Juggernauts on 9/17 at Ottobar - The Juan MacLean with Thrust Lab on 9/28 at Ottobar To enter just email us with a convincing argument explaining why you should get all of this for free. Winner will be notified tomorrow around 5pm just in time to start popping off Stellas (locals only).
Update: Winner is Jackson F. Here's an abridged excerpt from his plea: "I'm writing you because I have no idea where else to turn. I have an affliction. You see, I need to dance. Yes, I know there are plenty in Baltimore who want to dance, those who feel compelled to go to every dance party they can. They love dancing. That is all well and good. But me? I need it. Without pounding bass and all manner of bleeps, bloops, and samples...I can't go on...so please consider me as a candidate for this TaxLo Stimulus Package. I feel that I would be a worthy recipient. When I'm walking home early sunday morning and my friend rehashes the same old joke "Well, tonight a DJ saved your life," I hope to be able to stop him and say, "No, tonight it was a blog. Tonight, it was a blog."
When Girl Talk fans who downloaded Feed the Animals for free make unauthorized mashup videos of Girl Talk mashups, what happens? Is that like when Diet Sundrop tried to sue Sundrop for taste infringement?
Either way, this weekend is that kind of party with an implosion of 70+ artists creating anything but familiar laptop derivates. Not even counting the inaugural incarnation of indie Voltron glob Who is the Tunafish Man? (Dan Deacon + Spank Rock + Girl Talk), expect to see some unexpected collabs and spontaneous freaking in the aisles. Word is there will even be a couple Bmore elementary school janitors on site Sunday night for when things get sick, they got that special sawdust.
Ever check a blog from another blog's blogroll and find that blogger is no longer blogging? It's really scary, because you wonder what happened. Maybe they disappeared in the land of frowny orange oompahs?
Until we get bored or busy, we promise to remain crescenfresher than a pair of Nike Lobster Dunks, which come with rubber bands on the toe, a tablecloth pattern on the inside and butter-colored laces.
This weekend starts off with the refreshingly underrated Air France from Gothenburg, Sweden, the closest you're going to get this year to a brand new Avalanches LP. AF uses about 10,000 fewer samples while still mainlining the subconscious undercurrent of every beautiful moment you've ever had or dreamed, symphonic vinyl crackles and faded polaroids, bam. We've had No Way Down on repeat for a few weeks, the digi version is definitely worth buying for $5. Also funny how in February late-night headphone play was almost exclusively reserved for The Zombies, and here we are in June and nothing's changed.
Bonus retro rooftop bangers from Jaques Dutronc and The Bobby Hughes Experience whilst Yo La digs the scene with a mean gangsta lean.
