The Dominatrix Sleeps Tonight (Spank Rock Remix)

The original was considered too taboo for commercial radio or MTV to play in 1984, is unofficially responsible for getting Madonna into S&M, and serves as a spirited dedication to the professionals who earn a good living by chaining up, whipping, and torturing upscale Manhattan businessmen. All with an innocently pleasant Cyndi Lauper/Goonies/Who's That Girl? vibe.

Dominatrix - The Dominatrix Sleeps Tonight (Original 12" version)

I'm sure the torture business is down these days what with "The Hills," but still. Devlin & Darko sped up the tempo, let Amanda Blank establish dominance & spit on it for FabricLive 33 (definitely buy this album). Fabric doesn't allow mp3 posts so Devlin sent over the original cut below, which turned out to be quite an upbeat jam for your next consensual beatdown.

Amanda Blank - That Girl (Dominatrix blend)

Now the Dom is awake and receiving the MoMA treatment this Thusday as part of their Art/Music in Pop Culture film series. So I get to put on my woefully underused tweed jacket with elbow pads and drop a hamilton to watch this on the big screen along with an Andy Warhol-directed Cars video, a Sonic Youth video about anorexia, misc. Toni Basil, and a 1978 performance by The Cramps for the patients at California's Napa Mental Institute.

Rick Rubin (Leg-No Rmx)

Is it off key or just too hip?
Is it not enough, is it just too much?
Does it get you moving or is it too confusing?
Is it better than The Commish theme?

Spank Rock is tentatively scheduled to be in your building this Sunday sometime between the hours of 12pm to 10pm

As we get closer to Whartscape's cash money lightning jumpoff, Chief Wham City whig Dan Deacon stirs the pot further by revealing a special annoucement via a serious of non-crytpic Interweb messages - Spank Rock MC Naeem Juwan will be performing in a collaborative superproject also including DD and Girl Talk's Greg Gillis this weekend at Whartscape (presumably Sunday afternoon).

Not sure when this will happen, but you can leave your cell phone number and a BT technician may or may not call you 30 minutes before it goes down.

Spank Rock - Rick Rubin (President Eutl Rmx)

Quoth Dan:

"In addition to my set and gregg's trey told em set on sunday july 20, at whartscape, gregg gillis (girltalk), naeem juwan (spankrock) and i (dan deacon) will be doing a joint set of all new material jams eternal.

gregg and i have been talking about doing a band together for some time and i'm really excited naeem is going to be a part of it for this rad first birth. hopefully our sick jams turn out sick. tickets are still available but close to selling out. getting tickets would be safer than just showing up. ok baltimore, see you soooooon"

Well that is just huge, as the Spank/Deacon combo Floristree set at last year's Whartscape was the highlight of the weekend (check that here).

Reader contest - What should this supergroup be named???

Special Whartscape prize for best entry (just leave them in the comments).

The rest of the afternoon lineup includes White Williams, Ponytail, Future Islands, Height, Double Dagger (!), Black Dice and more, so, your Sunday is fully fitted. You can tape Ninja Warrior.

It's Your Turn To Like Holy Ghost!

It’s with a mixture of jealousy, pride and general malaise that we send our friends Holy Ghost! up to underground indie heaven. Even though they've technically only released one song, a few months of steady blog foam and top-tier DJ blessings have left our friends at Hipster Runoff grimly predicting the DFA disciples will follow the path of Justice and others before them towards quasi-widespread recognition, acclaim, and the eventual hater backlash.

Of course during this process we'll do our best to drag them back down, like we do with any artist that manages to rise above the freeloading portion of their fan base to reach a larger group of consumers who are still willing to pay for music. Because liking the next newest band first reflects our self-perception of being ahead of everyone else, and our ultimate goal - completely lapping the innovation curve all the way back to irony (you like what I liked six hours ago, and C+C Music Factory will be cool again to me soon) - forces us to lose the passion well before our previous pet project hits pop.

Sorry about that Holy Ghost! - you guys still own. And Spank Rock still owns. Here’s to cooler salad dressing commercials.

Baltimore Bangers n' Brazilian Baile!

Surprise performances from MC Spank Rock = cash money lightning. In this quick clip Baltimore native Naeem Juwan helps get the baile kids from Bonde do Role ready for the show, then Marina spits some Portugese for us re: Daft Punk and Afrika Bambatta, then everyone sings about Dwight Schrute:

When it was all said and done the guests included Ponytail, Plastic Little, Spank Rock, Bonde do Role, and even dirty dancing cameos by Johnny from The Death Set. If you have a chance to see Plastic Little, do - homeys laid it down like a glass carpet even during sober hour. Spank stepped in for a few dick joke songs then dropped his own solo set with mad decent bongo players, following Baltimore municipal regulations by performing at least half of the set in the crowd. Thanks to Josh Sisk for the photos.

Marina stole the show (e nossos corações) with her sweaty trampoline bounce and a filthy lyrical assault. Pretty sure at one point she drilled Portugese derenger rounds over Europe's The Final Countdown, so. Plus there's just something about a feisty Brazilian bomber in black spandex, heavy eyeliner and a Slayer shirt that works for us on multiple levels. Props to the Taxlo folks and Emily Rabbit for keeping it solid steel, tonight they come back with Spank Rock DJs Devlin and Darko.

See more Flickr sets here and here.

Bonde do Role - Solta O Frango
Spank Rock - Rick Rubin (President Eutl remix feat. Page Rock)
Spank Rock Girls and Boys (Original)
Plastic Little - The Jump Off

You can preview and download the entire Plastic Little set here courtesy of Jeff Mewbourn aka the Baltimore Taper.

Whartscape Pt. 7: Was Pretty Sure I Told You We Won't Stop

I didn't? Then where'd you get that preposterous hypothesis - did Steve tell you that? Steve....

Spank Rock is still in the building, thanks to repeated requests for some raw audio and more photos of the crazy people from this Saturday (the almost naked girl below tested exceptionally well). So we throw you over our collective knees once again and then that's it - go get your sick pleasures somewhere else because the Whartscape series is over.

Spank Rock - Lindsay Lohan's Revenge (live at Whartscape)

insert timely/snarky Lohan jab here

Spank Rock - Bump (live at Whartscape)
Spank Rock - Backyard Betty (live at Whartscape)

Below, an almost equally naked Cex asks "Were I to announce here that I have succeeded in forsaking my childish desires for wealth and fame, would not the first response of many internet users be the accusation that my true desire is to distinguish myself from my contemporaries in order to achieve greater wealth and fame? I mean status ain't hood right? And are you smiling because you agree or you took the last Beast?"

Spank Rock - Sweet Talk

We now promise to stop sending transmissions from Spank Rock's space nipple antenna on the condition that you buy these two albums:

Spank Rock - YoYoYoYoYo
Spank Rock - FabricLive 33
